Eric Siu: Hello, and welcome to another episode of Marketing School. I'm Eric Siu.

Neil Patel: I'm Neil Patel.

Eric Siu: Today, we're going to talk about SEO preparations that you can make for Black Friday. Neil, I actually forgot. When is Black Friday actually?

Neil Patel: Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving falls on a Thursday. Black Friday is the next day.

Eric Siu: Great. You can kick things off first. What is the first tip you have for SEO for Black Friday?

Neil Patel: Sure. Most people, they start their Black Friday marketing a few weeks before, which doesn't make sense. SEO's a long-term play, so whatever your offers are going to be, make sure you start optimizing pages for those Black Friday discounts right now. Don't wait till the last minute. Ideally, you want to start at least a month or two in advance.

Eric Siu: The other thing I'll add, that goes without saying because SEO is whenever we tell new clients, "It's a 6-12-month journey even to just get things kick-started." You want to get things started ahead of time, and that also includes you have the right landing pages, you have your plans ahead of time in terms of deals you want to offer, too. That's all up there, gift guides, videos, things like that, too, and related to it, on the video perspective, if you think of YouTube SEO, you get the videos going first. Well, I think if you get those up first, you start to rank for them, then you're going to reap the benefits of that in long-term.

Neil Patel: The second thing with SEO is when you're optimizing, it's all about click-through rates, as well. When people are searching on Google, you want to get high click-through rates. That means your title tag, your meta description tag, have to be optimized for urgency, especially if you want to rank really fast for Black Friday. Your best bet is to include Black Friday related key terms. Even if you're selling, let's say, shoes or you're selling some sort of soapbox or whatever it may be, you need to include Black Friday within your title and meta description, at least that phrase or keyword or other ones around it, so that way, you can get the most amount of traffic.

Eric Siu: Then this goes without saying, too, but, remember, SEO, there's a lot of that it's based on content, it's based on links, too, so you got to build links to your holiday sales if you want them to rank. This doesn't have to be a lot of external stuff. Think about how this can work for internal linking. Use the link equity that you have, especially if you have a lot of link equity on the homepage, which almost all sites ... That's where most the link equity is. You have a passing to the relevant pages, and then, that way, it starts to rank easier. You have it already. It's not that difficult to do.

Neil Patel: Also, use social signals. Social signals indirectly help search engine optimization, so make sure you're pushing your most important offers and pages on your social profiles, from Facebook to Twitter to LinkedIn, assuming if you're doing B2B promotions, which you should. A lot of people just think Black Friday offers are for a consumer-based type of offerings. It also works for B2B, as well.
