Announcer: Get ready for your daily dose of marketing strategies and tactics from entrepreneurs with the gile and experience to help you find success in any marketing capacity. You're listening to Marketing School with your instructors, Neil Patel and Eric Siu.
Eric Siu: Welcome to another episode of Marketing School. I'm Eric Siu.
Neil Patel: I'm Neil Patel.
Eric Siu: Today, we are going to talk about how we can do SEO without writing content. The first thing you can do, I'm going to say, without writing more content, the first thing you can do, I'm assuming that you have content already, is you go to Google Search console, and then what you do is you make sure that you're looking at the pages that have a high impression count, but a low click-through rate. You're looking at the pages that Google is showing you for, they're giving you the credit for, but your title or your meta description or both are not doing a great job of bringing them to your website.
You're basically not doing your job as a marketer. In order to drive that traffic, that SEO traffic, that organic traffic, back to your site, just write a better title, write a better meta description. You can just basically export this information and just track it in there, or you can use a tool that I have called a ClickFlow to make this all easier, and it's all tracked in there. That's how you can start.
Neil Patel: I'm pulling up my Google Analytics for Eric, and I'm going to ask him a question. Eric, you're looking at my stats. What's my most popular page? Which is a tool? Number two is a blog. Number three is a homepage. The blog page, which is number two, has a link to all the blog posts. Number four is ...
Eric Siu: Tool.
Neil Patel: Another tool. It's a SEO analyzer. As you can see, two of my four most popular pages are tools. Whatever business you have, just go create a tool for it, and you don't have to create it from scratch. You can buy a script. For example, if you're in the mortgage industry, go buy a mortgage calculator script. You don't have to really create any content. You don't have to have any development experience. You just install the script with a few clicks of a button, and, boom, you're off to the races. Over time, that'll continually ranks higher and higher. You don't need a ton of text. People love tools. The user metrics are awesome, the time on site, the page views, all that helps boost your rankings, not just for that page, but your whole overall site.
Eric Siu: To build on that, this is sometimes a hit or miss. It's not always a home run, but you can go out there, you can go to buysellbiz.com or Flippa or FE International or broker your own deals, but you can go out there, check out websites, do your due diligence. Obviously, you want to run those sites through different tools. Make sure they have the traffic, the domain authority, all that different, the links and all that, but you can buy websites, and then just take that traffic, instead of having to write new content all the time.
Neil, you've done this a couple times, yes?
Neil Patel: Yes. I've done this, as well. In general, everyone has this big misconception that content is needed for SEO. We both have a friend named Brian Dean. He runs a site called Backlinko. I don't know how many blog posts he has, but I think it's under 40 or 50.
Eric Siu: Under 40.
Neil Patel: It's 30-something. It's somewhere around there. He gets, I think ... What is he at? Somewhere between 100 and 200,000 visitors a month?
Eric Siu: About 120, last time I heard.
Neil Patel: He's getting good traffic. He barely has content. He's not paying an arm and a leg to keep writing new content. All he's doing is making his existing content better or keeping it up-to-date or refreshing it. Everyone thinks that, "Oh, you need to keep writing more content. You need to blog daily." That's a big misconception. Yes, you need to build links, you need to create amazing content for the pieces that you do have, you need to spend time and energy into design, but you can even generate a lot of traffic and get a ton of rankings just through things like design.
For example, I was a co-founder at Kissmetrics years ago, and we built up the blog to over a million visitors a month, mainly through infographics. We just paid a designer $500 a infographic. There was no text, all visual. We promoted it, built up a lot of back links, naturally, and it caused our whole site to rank higher, and we just got a ton of traffic because of the infograph.
Eric Siu: What we're basically saying is ... Well, Neil made the point. Content's not the only way. There are other ways, but that's all we have for today. Go to singlegrain.com/giveaway to check out our marketing goodies, to get marketing goodies, and we'll see you tomorrow.
