Eric Siu: In this video, I'm going to give you some sales and marketing automation tactics for your list to help you grow. My name's Eric Siu. I am the cohost of the Marketing School podcast and the host of the Growth Everywhere podcast where we nerd out on entrepreneurship and marketing.
First things first, make sure that you have marketing automation set up. This kind of goes without saying, but I'm hoping you have this set up. I'm hoping, in today's world it's kind of table stakes, but maybe not. If you use tools like Drip, HubSpot, Marketo, there's a lot out there, just depends on the complexity. I know for people that want things simple, there's Drop and ConvertKit. ConvertKit's more so for kind of bloggers and Drip is more for eCommerce.
The other thing I'll say is, when you collect emails, and you should be collecting emails on your website just so you can put them into your automation sequence, you can use a tool like OptinMonster for example, and make sure in your intro email after people have opted in, you are segmenting people. Maybe you have people that you're looking to do business with that are over $5 million in revenue, under $5 million in revenue, or maybe they don't have a business. The idea here is that you're segmenting and you're tagging these people so that you know what kind of messages to send them, because people are different. That way, your open rates are going to be higher, it's going to be better for you overall.
The other thing you want to do too, is make sure that you're cleaning your list every quarter or so. If you are emailing a bunch of people that just aren't opening, your open rates are going to go down and you're also going to be charged more for, well, having such a big list in the first place. Make sure that you're pruning your list to keep your open rates high and that you're keeping your costs lower.
Get better at copy writing. People don't think about copywriting in today's day and age, but if you read Breakthrough Advertising, or if you read The Boron Letters, which is from the late Gary Halbert, you're going to get better at copywriting and you're going to know the psychology of people and you're going to be able to convert them better. Any kind of marketers nowadays, it's just, "Oh, let's just do paid advertising." You've got to be good at copywriting, because it's the psychology of getting people to take out their wallet, take out their credit card and pay you, that still takes a lot of work and you have to be able to convince them. That's marketing 101. That's also sales 101 as well.
