Eric Siu: In this video, I'm gonna tell you a couple of key takeaways from Apple's marketing. My name's Eric Siu, I'm the co-host of the Marketing School podcast, and the host of the Growth Everywhere podcast, where I interview world-class entrepreneurs every single week. And, going back to Marketing School, that's every single day, where we nerd out on marketing.
Key things to learn from Apple's marketing. First and foremost, is simplicity. They say, “Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.” If you look at this device, over here, you look at the iPhone, everything out there, everything that goes into the design, everything that goes into technology is very simple. It's out of the way. So, how can you do something that's very simple, out of the way? Apple's not the only example. If you look at Medium, Medium's design is simple, and it's out of the way. How do you keep things simple? And, how do you keep things to the point?
Second thing is to get influencers to have product placements. You look at Beats by Dr. Dre, Apple ended up buying them. So, you can see a lot of different celebrities are using the products in their ads. Other thing I really like about Apple, is that they don't get into price wars. They are the premium product out there, they don't try to fight to the bottom. When you try to fight these price wars, you end up racing to the bottom.
How can you price in a premium way? I was at a software conference a couple weeks ago, everybody was talking about going up-market. Instead of everyone charging $9, or $29 a month for their product, they're going higher. They're moving up-market to mid-market companies, and enterprise companies, to charge more money. That's what you want to do, you want to make sure that you have a premium offering, that your brand is premium.
The other thing is, Apple is very good at also what their language, their copy, they understand their audience and they talk to them in their language. Their copy is very subtle, it's succinct, and it's just like their design. It's very to the point, and it doesn't get in your way.
Those are just a couple lessons from Apple that you can take and integrate into what you do.
